So, what exactly is "precon"?
A gentle breakdown
of how it differs from fertility prep

Preconception care isn't just about preparing for pregnancy. It’s a way of thinking that helps you understand your body with a slightly longer-term perspective.

"So, what exactly is 'precon'?"
"How is it different from fertility prep?"

This term has been popping up a lot lately, and it’s often vaguely understood as "preparing for pregnancy."

But in reality, precon is much more familiar and far-reaching.

Understanding your body with a slightly longer-term perspective.

That is the starting point of this concept.

1 What is precon? Just the basics for now

Preconception Care is the idea of looking after your body and health status even before you intend to get pregnant.

However, the important thing to note here is that it is not solely "for the sake of pregnancy."

The difference between fertility prep and precon

If fertility prep is "action aimed at achieving pregnancy," precon is a layer of "understanding" that sits further upstream.

Regardless of whether you have future plans for a family, there is inherent value in simply knowing the state of your own body.

2 Our bodies are an "extension of our daily lives"

Our bodies don't just change at special moments.

Sleep, diet, stress, exercise. They are constantly being adjusted through the accumulation of these factors.

The same goes for hormones. They maintain their balance while being influenced by our day-to-day lives.

Reproductive health is no exception.

It’s not a switch that suddenly turns on one day; it’s an extension of your daily life.

That’s why precon is less about special preparation and more about a perspective of "how to view the trajectory you’re on."

3 Why do we often "choose without really knowing"?

Let’s take a moment to look at society.

This isn't limited to any specific country, but many societies share the following common tendencies:

  • Health isn't usually prioritized in daily life
  • Even when there’s an issue, it doesn't always lead to consultation or professional care
  • Topics related to sex and reproduction are hard to share openly

These situations aren't just a matter of individual consciousness; they emerge from a combination of access to information, education, cultural backgrounds, and systemic design.

As a result, it becomes easy to fall into a state of "making choices without knowing enough."

And what's important is that this isn't an "exceptional case"—it's a premise that applies to everyone.

Preconception care is not about increasing the number of "correct actions" against this structure.

Instead, it’s about understanding your own body and creating a state where you can access information and support when you need it.

In short, precon is a concept for establishing a "foundation of
understanding and choice" that exists before any action is taken.

4 Why is the word "precon" appearing now?

There have been several shifts in the background that have helped this term spread.

1. Increased visibility

There are more ways to grasp body conditions like ovulation and hormone levels.

2. Increased dialogue

Infertility and women’s health have begun to be treated as legitimate societal themes.

3. Increased options

Services and products have expanded, widening the gateways to access.

With these changes, the "territory we didn't know about" is turning into a "territory we can choose."

5 How is the situation in Japan changing?

In Japan, the framing of precon has been changing bit by bit over the past few years.

It used to be treated mostly as "something to watch out for if you're thinking about pregnancy."

But now, it is starting to be positioned within national policy as a theme related to health literacy and future life choices for the younger generation.

  • 2021 The Basic Policy on Child and Maternal Health established guidelines for building systems related to preconception care.
  • 2023 The revised Basic Policy clarified the promotion of preconception care, encouraging both men and women to acquire correct knowledge about sex and pregnancy and to manage their health.
  • 2024 The Basic Policy on Economic and Fiscal Management and Reform 2024 included the construction of a care system that allows for consultation support, as well as the formulation and promotion of a five-year strategy.
  • 2025 The Five-Year Plan for Promoting Preconception Care was released, highlighting the dissemination of knowledge, consultation support, and specialized support from medical institutions.

In other words, precon is moving from a domain of individual effort to one supported by society.

6 What is the government trying to do?

To summarize the current policy direction in one phrase: "Make it possible to know first."

What they are trying to organize

  • Ability to access correct knowledge
  • Availability of places to consult
  • Ability to connect to medical care when needed

The important point here is that before "getting people to see a doctor," the emphasis is placed on creating a state where they "can know."

7 Precon is not "starting something"

Reading this far, you might feel like, "Don't I have to do something?"

But precon is not about adding more to your plate.

If anything, it is more about creating a state where you don't have to put your own body on the back burner.

It’s not about a huge change—it’s more like having a little bit of room for understanding.

Regardless of whether you are considering pregnancy right now,
knowing your own body will help protect your future options.

Summary

  • Precon is not just "prep for pregnancy"—it's "understanding your body"
  • Think of it as an extension of your daily life
  • In Japan, the framing is shifting from the individual to society
  • "Just knowing" is enough to start

Precon is not just for a special few.

You don't need to make any future decisions right now. But knowing your own body will become the foundation for when you do eventually make choices.

Start by knowing. And start by not putting your own body on the back burner.

By knowing your body,
your future options expand.
