Understanding sexual wellness as health literacy

When you hear "sexual wellness," many people might still feel a little apprehensive.

However, globally, sexuality is now starting to be re-evaluated not as "stimulation" or "taboo," but as health literacy for understanding and regulating one's own body.

This week, I want to introduce the Lioness Smart Vibrator, developed by the American femtech company Lioness.

This is not simply a device "for pleasure."
It is a tool "for self-discovery."

The first product to make orgasm "data"

The most distinctive feature of Lioness is its use of biofeedback technology to visualize bodily reactions.

By connecting with an app, you can quietly review "how your body reacted," rather than "how you felt."

What Lioness reveals

Lioness's novelty lies in its ability to visualize bodily reactions that are difficult to express through sensations or emotions alone, in the form of data.

In fact, until Lioness appeared, no organization in the world, including universities and research institutions, possessed data on orgasm.

It made something that "no one had tried to measure" visible as a mere "fact" through the power of technology.

I believe this is a very quiet and fundamental innovation.

Neither "curing" nor "determining the right answer"

The reason I like Lioness is that this product does not make any definitive statements.

  • It doesn't say "this is right."
  • It doesn't impose "this is how it should be."
  • It doesn't claim to improve or treat anything.

All it offers is "material for insight."

The data serves as an opportunity to pay attention to your own condition, rather than for evaluation.

Some people may notice a connection with stress or sleep, while others might think, "Maybe I've been pushing myself too hard lately."

That's fine.
I believe self-care doesn't require finding answers.

Why I want to introduce it at fermata

I've known the founding team of Lioness since around 2019, and they've been friends who have continuously supported and helped fermata since we first held Femtech Fes!.

Both their products and the team's atmosphere somehow lack any "indecency."

As engineers, they honestly continue to address the challenges before them. I believe this attitude attracts new colleagues and researchers.

In Japan, there are many things that need to be organized, such as expression regulations, cultural hurdles, and rules regarding pharmaceutical affairs, advertising, and platforms.

That's why at fermata, we prioritize how to communicate it and in what context, rather than "how to sell it."

Lioness is a product that I feel has the potential to be delivered very carefully as an entry point for education, self-understanding, and self-care.

As an "entry point" for such occasions

  • For a quiet self-care moment, to regulate yourself alone
  • As a step before talking to your partner
  • As an opportunity to pause and think, "How am I doing lately?"

Sexual wellness is not just for special people.

I believe it is an extension of everyone's health.

Choices that bring a little ease through knowledge

There are many options in the world that have not yet reached Japan.

fermata will continue to curate and deliver products that "bring a little ease through knowledge."
