[September is Disaster Preparedness Month] #PeriodProductsInDisasterBags – Review your personal emergency supplies –

Sep 1, 2022

September is Disaster Preparedness Month every year.
When thinking about what you need at an evacuation center, clothes, food, and water come to mind, but what is often forgotten are items needed during menstruation. The stock at evacuation centers is not always sufficient.

This time, we have compiled information you should know about disaster preparedness and menstruation. Let's think together about what you need!

Do you have a "disaster preparedness kit" at home in case of a disaster?

A survey conducted by fermata on social media revealed that over 70% of people do not have "menstrual products" prepared. How about you?

A. For those who are prepared (and have menstrual products)
→ Please read "News from fermata store"

B. For those who are prepared (but do not have menstrual products)
→ Please read "About local government disaster stockpiles"

C. For those who are not prepared
→ Please read "About disasters in Japan"

About Disasters in Japan*1

Japan is a disaster-prone country. Due to its topographical, geological, and meteorological characteristics, it is vulnerable to disasters and faces extremely harsh natural conditions.

It is important to be aware of the possibility of disasters and to be well-prepared on a daily basis.

About Local Government Disaster Stockpiles

Do you know what and how much each local government stockpiles?

In about 60% of local governments nationwide, there are no female disaster management officials. Compared to local governments where the percentage of women in disaster management departments is 10% or more, local governments without female staff tend to have less stockpiling of items such as women's underwear, sanitary products, baby bottles, and diapers. *2

Furthermore, in one local government, for an evacuation center expected to accommodate up to 800 people, only two packs of 36 sanitary pads were stored (as of May 2022) *2, indicating that even if stockpiled, the quantity may be insufficient.

The preparations made by local governments are only for emergencies, and they do not necessarily cater to preferences like texture or shape, nor to individual conditions, and the numbers are limited.

Not everyone needs the same things, so make preparations that suit you. *3
