"What exactly is precon?"
"How is it different from fertility treatment?"

This term, which has become common recently,
might often be understood simply as "preparation before pregnancy."

But precon is actually more accessible and broader than that.

Understanding your body with a slightly longer time horizon.
That is the starting point of this concept.

1|What is precon (start here)

Preconception Care is
a concept of getting your body and health in order before becoming pregnant.

However, what's important here is that,

it's not just "for pregnancy."

If fertility treatment is "actions aimed at pregnancy,"
precon is a layer of "understanding" that comes much earlier.

Regardless of future plans,
knowing your body's condition in itself is meaningful.

2|Our bodies are made from the "extension of daily life"

Our bodies don't change only at special times.

Sleep, diet, stress, exercise.
Through the accumulation of these, they are gradually adjusted.

Hormones are the same.
They maintain balance while being affected by daily life.

Functions related to pregnancy are no exception.

It's not a switch that suddenly turns on, but something that is an extension of daily life.

That's why precon, rather than being a special preparation,
is a concept closer to the perspective of "how to view the current trajectory."

3|Why do we "choose without knowing"?

Let's talk a little bit about society for a moment.

This is not limited to a specific country, but many societies have the following common tendencies:

  • Body matters are not prioritized in daily life.
  • Even if there is a problem, it doesn't immediately lead to consultation or medical examination.
  • Topics related to sex and reproduction are not openly shared.

These situations arise not so much from individual consciousness issues, but from a combination of
access to information, education, cultural background, and institutional design.

As a result,

"a state of making choices without sufficient knowledge"

is more likely to occur.

And importantly,
this state is not a "special case," but rather a premise that can happen to anyone.

Preconception care is not about increasing "correct behaviors" in response to this structure.

Instead,
it's about understanding your body and creating a state where you can access information and support when needed.

In other words, precon can be described as a concept for establishing the "foundation for understanding and choice" that precedes action.

4|Why has the term "precon" emerged now?

The spread of this term is due to several changes:

・What has become visible
Increased means of understanding bodily states, such as ovulation and hormones.

・What has become discussable
Infertility and women's health have become societal topics.

・What has become choosable
Increased services and products, broadening access.

With these factors combined,

"previously unknown areas" are transforming into "choosable areas."

5|How is it changing in Japan?

In Japan, too, the positioning of precon has gradually changed over the past few years.

Previously, it was an area often treated as "what people considering pregnancy should be mindful of."

But now,

it is beginning to be positioned within national policies as a theme related to the health literacy and future options of younger generations.

For example,

  • 2021: Promotion of precon explicitly stated in the Basic Policy on Perinatal and Pediatric Care.
  • 2023: Strengthening knowledge dissemination and health management organized.
  • 2024: A five-year strategic promotion plan proposed.

Within this flow,

it is shifting from an individual effort to an area supported by society.

6|What is the government trying to do?

To summarize the current policy direction in one sentence:

"First, make it possible to know."

That is,

  • Access to correct knowledge
  • Places for consultation
  • Ability to connect to medical care when needed

to establish these.

What is important here is that

the focus is on creating a "state of being able to know" before "encouraging medical examinations."

7|Precon is not about "starting something"

After reading this far, you might feel like you "have to do something."

But precon is

not about adding something.

Rather, it's closer to the idea of

creating a state where you don't have to put your body last.

It's not a major change,

but perhaps a state with a little more room for understanding.

Summary

  • Precon is "understanding your body," not "preparing for pregnancy."
  • It should be considered an extension of daily life.
  • In Japan, its position is shifting from individual to societal responsibility.
  • Simply "knowing" is enough to start.
